Woodworth Lake, until
recently, was an active Boy Scout camp. It is now used for public camping.
Scouts still use the lake but not under an official Boy Scout program.
The lake is named after the Woodworth families that
lived southeast of the lake in Mayfield. To the southeast over the mountain was
the farm of William G. Woodworth of Mayfield, NY, and later his son Hiram
Woodworth. William G Woodworth (5) was the son of Gershom (4), Caleb
(3), Benjamin (2), Walter (1).
William G. Woodworth served in the Revolutionary War,
was captured and taken to Montreal, Canada, escaped and made his way back to
Mayfield alone, rejoined and served as a scout.
